About Solar Sails: Space Pirates
Solar Sails is a space-action RPG with adventure elements. Control a pirate ship, plunder the royal navy, launch a scout duck to search for treasures, upgrade your ship with alien technologies, and sail onwards to unveil the darkest secrets of the universe.

My Involvement
I lead Cosmic Duck Games, a small indie team, where I act as Game Designer and Narrative Designer. I laid out the campaign storyline, designed the quests, developed the world, and wrote the characters. I collaborate with the rest of the team to bring our vision to life.

The main aspects of the world of Solar Sails: Space Pirates.

Hyperborean Galaxy
The Hyperborean Galaxy is home to a myriad of worlds inhabited by diverse species and life forms. Even though humans dominate the majority of the known galaxy, large parts of it remain unexplored yet. This is where dangers, ancient mysteries, and treasures await the bravest of space travelers.


Solar Clouds
A flat disc of colorful nebula-like clouds stretches across the galaxy. These clouds produce oxygen, allowing sailors to breathe in space and explore the cosmos aboard ships with open decks. Thus, It is not uncommon for Hyperborean denizens to settle within the clouds and live their entire lives under the stars.
Solar Sails
Apart from oxygen, the clouds are ionized with solar energy. They provide a renewable source of power used by the Hyperborean denizens as electricity. Ships equipped with solar sails absorb the energy directly from the clouds and utilize it to power their engines. Entire cities built in space use solar sails to power their infrastructure.


Rum
Rum is the most popular beverage in the galaxy. Humans and non-humans alike use it to calm the body and the soul. Yet, the authorities consider it illegal and prohibit it due to health concerns. As such, rum is worth a lot in the black market. For just a few barrels of rum, one can acquire a top-class ship engine… or end up behind bars for the rest of their lives.
Ancient Artifacts
Various factions across the galaxy seek the ancient “Demiurge artifacts” – relics of a bygone alien civilization imbued with magical power. Magic wielders and use them to enhance their abilities. Naval superpowers use them to strengthen their ships’ weaponry. Smugglers and bounty hunters often make a fortune selling them on the black market.


History


The Chronology in Hyperborea is measured in human years when the zero point begins with the invention of the Solar Sails. A.S.T = After Solar Travel, B.S.T = Before Solar Travel.


Age of Isolation


Prehistoric Hyperborea (before 10000 B.S.T):
Since the dawn of time, various races and species inhabited the Hyperborean Galaxy. Before the arrival of humans, the galaxy was presumably dominated by the Demiurge, an enigmatic god-like race of unknown appearance. The recent archeological findings suggest that they mysteriously vanished in an instant. The Demiurge left behind powerful artifacts imbued with magical powers. These artifacts, characterized by glowing magical runes, come in various shapes and sizes. They provide a range of powers, from enhancing magical abilities to strengthening the firepower of ships’ weaponry.

Human Colonization (around -10000 – 5000 B.S.T):
Humans presumably arrive from another galaxy, fleeing their dying world in search of a new home. Ancient Demiurge murals depict them as hostile colonists arriving on giant spaceships. The ancient human ships made of alloy could not sustain the solar clouds spread across the galaxy. Ships designed to fly in a vacuum couldn’t resist the continuous friction with atmospheric nebulas. In time, their metals wore out and rendered the ships unusable. Stuck on different planets, humanity ended up isolated from each other. Due to technological degradation, humanity seized its attempts to return to space. Over time, people stopped believing they had ever been to space in the first place. During the thousands of years of isolation, various human civilizations developed separately on different planets.
Native Hyperborean Species (around -10000 B.S.T – 0 A.S.T):
Simultaneously with humans, the native non-human species across the galaxy developed into their own civilizations. Glyphens, a race of immortal sentient asteroids, discovered a gas-like substance that opened their mind and made them rethink their worldview, so they delved into philosophy. Coggorts, a race of sentient insectoids obsessed with the idea of space exploration, progressed in technology and built tower hives, aiming to elevate above their planet’s atmosphere. Sirens, humanoid beings with fishtails, found a way to imbue their voices with ancient artifacts, which gave them the ability to manipulate objects and living beings with the power of their vocals.

Reconnection


The invention of Solar Sails (-4 B.S.T – 0 A.S.T):
On the sunny planet of Hyxon, the technologically advanced insectoid species of Coggorts developed the first working means of space travel. It started with Rubikon, a wealthy Coggort entrepreneur obsessed with space exploration. In order to reach space, he built a tower that rose above the atmosphere and powered it with solar panels. Once reaching space, Rubikon discovered clouds that produced solar energy ten times more than the sun. But most importantly, he learned that these clouds also produce oxygen. Rubikon developed a boat with an engine powered by a solar panel and flew into space without any protective suit. Once in space, he circumnavigated the planet on his boat, all while enjoying the cosmic breeze. Thus, Rubikon discovered the means of space travel.


Reconnection (0 – 72 A.S.T):
With his new invention, Rubikon established an interstellar corporation – Solar Industries LTD – and invested in building vessels powered by solar panels. He launched expeditions across the galaxy to introduce his technology to other species and attract potential clients. During one of the expeditions, Coggorts encountered humans and established trade relations with them. Coggorts gave them access to solar sails technology, while humans taught Coggorts ship architecture based on their already existing water sailing ships made of wood and metals. Thanks to mutual trade with various planets and factions, Coggorts finally reconnected the galaxy after thousands of years of isolation.
Relocation (72 – 108 A.S.T):
Later on, Coggorts developed gravity stabilizers powered by solar sails, allowing the denizens of the galaxy to build structures in space with their own centers of gravity. Following this novelty, the majority of the galactic population found living in space to be more efficient than staying on planets. Instead of traversing the atmosphere to reach their homes, they would dock their ships right next to their houses in space. For most people, planets become places of luxury and vacations. For space cities and interstellar governments, planets served as hubs of resources – water, wood, and provision. Many people lived their entire lives in space, without ever visiting any planet. Slowly but steadily, most of the galaxy became dependent on solar sails.

Great Galaxy War


Monopoly on Solar Sails (108 – 141 A.S.T):
As time went by, profit-driven Coggorts displaced Rubikon from his position and took over Solar Industries LTD. They monopolized the production of solar sails, brutally suppressed any competition, and sanctioned entire planets at will by withholding the supply of solar sails. One of the sanctioned human planets, Stygion, notoriously known for its dislike of non-human species, refused to bend the knee to the Coggort monopoly. Stygians started hoarding powerful ancient artifacts and utilizing them in their weaponry.

Concerned with the growing might of the Stygian fleet, Coggorts outlawed the artifacts and started hunting for those possessing them. The harder Solar Industries LTD choked the Stygian economy, the more hateful Stygians grew towards Coggorts. They craved a strong leader who would rise against Coggorts’ hegemony.

Great Galaxy War (141 – 152 A.S.T):
With the rising hatred against Coggorts, a religious preacher Daemon Lance gained popularity by advocating human supremacy. According to his idea, ancient humans were immortal and powerful beings. But the rival alien species grew jealous of them. They crafted magical artifacts and used them to drain human powers. As a result, humans lost their immortality and grew weaker. And thus, Coggorts wanted to prevent humans from getting their powers back.

Fueled by hatred, the majority of Stygians blindly followed Daemon. He united all of Stygion under the Empire of the Holy Lance and proclaimed himself as its Emperor. The Empire built a mighty fleet empowered by ancient artifacts. The new Emperor launched devastating Holy Crusades across the galaxy, eradicating Coggorts and other non-human species.

Fall of the Empire (152 A.S.T):
After years of devastating war, the galaxy united against the Empire and retaliated by besieging Stygion. The desperate Daemon turned to the ancient Demiurge murals for aid. After some research, he found Pandora’s Box – a gateway to another dimension – deep at the planet’s core. Daemon believed that with the powers stored in it, Stygians would restore their ancient powers, and gain immortality. Daemon ventured into Stygion’s core and opened Pandora’s Box, which caused the destruction of the planet. Stygion exploded in a supernova, destroying what was left of the Empire, which led to the end of the Great War.

Post War Galaxy


Healthy Nation Program (168 A.S.T):
With the defeat of the Empire and the crash of the Coggort monopoly over solar sails, a new superpower emerged – the Galactic Federation. Remembering their past failures from the Great Galaxy War, the Federation aimed to make its citizens healthier and fitter for navy service. The Federation Senate enacted a prohibition on rum, fatty foods, and pasta. The Federation propagates the idea of a “Healthy Nation” by scaring its citizens with dreadful stories about the side effects of “dangerous foods”. According to the official Federation doctrine, consuming those products makes humans lose their physique and intelligence. This, in turn, makes them unfit for spacefaring – the biggest shame for every Federation citizen.


Rise of Piracy (172 A.S.T – 187 A.S.T):
While the “Healthy Nation” policy made the nation healthier, it caused the rum market to collapse. Rum traders, along with other affected citizens, organized protests that quickly escalated into a rebellion. In response, the Federation brutally suppressed it, crushing any hopes of future uprisings. After the failure of the rebellion, former rebels turned to smuggling and piracy, causing rum, fatty food, and pasta to become valuable commodities on the black market. The Federation started hunting down pirates and smugglers, eliminating them one by one. But piracy endured and lived on the outskirts and outside of the Federation’s domain.
Pastafarians (84 A.S.T – Today):
For over a century, the religious community of Pastafarians who worshiped the Flying Spaghetti Monster, a mysterious cosmic deity made of giant spaghetti and meatballs, had been at peace with the entire galaxy. Pastafarians mostly engaged in philanthropic activities, such as cooking pasta in giant space bowls to feed hungry space travelers. But as the Federation enacted its prohibition on rum, fatty food, and pasta, Pastafarians became outlaws by definition – since pasta is their traditional meal.

Refusing to submit to the tyrannical regime, the Pastafarians started collaborating with pirates and actively supporting the black market for rum, fatty food, and pasta. Since the Pastafarian teaching forbids violence, they preferred to go into hiding. But some Pastafarians grew tired of their pacifism in the face of imminent danger. They claimed it was time to raise their cannons in self-defense.

Rising Tensions (Today):
Seeking to bolster the might of their fleets, several galactic superpowers turn their gaze upon the ancient artifacts. Seeing it as an opportunity to make a fortune, pirates, and smugglers roam the galaxy in search of any mysterious artifacts they can find. Meanwhile, rumors circulate about an emerging cult that calls itself the “Holy Lance”. Its members claim that the mysteriously vanished Holy Lance fleet is about to return and their everliving Emperor Daemon Lance would once again plunge the galaxy into a devastating war.

Races/Species


Discover what and who inhabits the Hyperborean galaxy.

Humans

Standing straight, erect, walking on two legs, flailing two arms, with a heavy head on their neck, and ambitions that could put a creator god to shame. Humans dominate almost the entire galaxy, or at least the known part of it. They colonized the Hyperborean Galaxy thousands of years ago and gave birth to various human civilizations on different planets. As of today, two predominantly human superpowers – the Galactic Federation and the Starlit Dominion – wrestle for control of the galaxy.
Coggorts

Coggorts are technologically advanced species of mechanical insectoids made of metal plates and cogs. They hail from Hyxon, a fully mechanical planet with Hives towering up above its atmosphere. Each Hive serves as a colony, presiding over a cluster of Coggorts that share a collective consciousness.

Coggorts resemble mechanical bugs with two legs and four arms. They are essentially organic brains placed inside mechanical bodies. In the past, when the Coggorts were still organic, a plague almost wiped them out. To preserve their species, Coggorts ditched their bodies and uploaded their brains into mechanical constructs.

Sirens

Sirens are spacefaring beings with human tops and mechanically armored fishtails, who traverse space by levitating flying islands. Sirens possess magical artifacts that serve as the source of their voice and their powers. They allow Sirens to levitate objects and destroy them with the power of their voice.

Most Sirens live in small communities beneath asteroids and attack anyone who wanders into their territories. Legends say, they sing songs to charm sailors with their beautiful voices and make them crush into asteroids.

“Our songs are our power.”
Glyphens

Glyphens are a species of sentient asteroids with gas-like cores wrapped in stone shells. Their stone bodies ensure their immortality unless it is destroyed and the gas core is heated. As Glyphens age, they absorb more stone mass and become thicker. The older Glyphens increase in size and sometimes grow additional eyes.

As immortal species who have lived for centuries, Glyphens are deeply immersed in philosophy. They spend their time discussing the meaning of life, all the while smoking a gas-like substance called “The Cheel” and experiencing a never-ending euphoria.

“We are all stardust.”
Celestials

Celestials are bright and majestic space creatures that resemble butterflies. They consume carbon emissions as nourishment and produce solar clouds, which makes them natural purifiers of the galaxy. But their beautiful appearance deceives a lot of space travelers – Celestials are extremely aggressive and attack anything that emits light. A small pack of Celestials is capable of tearing a spaceship apart. For that reason, the number of Celestials across the galaxy is dwindling. Some factions consider them endangered species and provide them with closed reservations to inhabit.
Demiurge

The Demiurge is a name given by historians to an enigmatic species that mysteriously vanished and left behind a vast legacy of ruins and artifacts imbued with magical power. Their ruins are adorned with murals that depict every known species in the galaxy, including humans. Despite finding so many ruins and artifacts, archeologists haven’t found any clue to their appearance. Judging by the state of their ruins, historians believe that they may have been wiped out during a galaxy-wide conflict.

Galactic Federation

The Galactic Federation is an authoritarian intergalactic superpower that values strength, national unity, and health. As of today, it entirely controls three solar systems and operates the largest navy in the galaxy. The Federation Navy actively searches for and utilizes powerful alien artifacts to bolster its might. To ensure the strength and health of their nation, the Federation authorities enforce a prohibition on rum, fatty foods, and pasta. They wage a long-lasting war against piracy, rum contraband, and a frivolous and unhealthy lifestyle.

“A healthy nation is a powerful nation.”
“True power lies in ideas, but cannons make ideas come true.”
Empire of the Holy Lance

The Holy Lance was a huge empire that conquered almost the entire galaxy and one day disappeared without a trace. During its short reign, the Empire launched devastating Holy Crusades across the galaxy, aiming to eradicate all non-human species. The entire galaxy stood together to fight the imperial legions, a period in history known as the Great Galaxy War. Driven by the pursuit of power, its ambitious emperor Daemon Lance opened a gateway to another dimension. He triggered an anomaly that caused the whole Empire, along with its fleet, to vanish in an instant.

“Solar Industries lights the galaxy for gold. The Holy Lance does the same for free.”
Pastafarians

The weirdos wearing colanders on their heads, feeding weary sailors with free pasta, and celebrating all day, are the Pastafarians. They worship a divine being made of noodles and meatballs and call it the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Pastafarians hail from a distant planet called Pasta Faria II, which resembles a giant ball of spaghetti and meatballs. They stay out of the galactic conflicts and engage in philanthropic activities, such as feeding poor space travelers and giving shelter to those in need.

“Accept His Noodly Magnificence into your heart, and ye shall forever be free! Ra'men!”
Joe's Pirates

Space marauders, pirates, outlaws – there are many names to call the lawless bunch that roam the galaxy to loot and plunder. “Joe’s Pirates” is an “organized” group who live in a trade hub built by Joe O’Brien, a retired pirate. Joe built a safe haven for pirates who wanted to make a living without being hunted down by the authorities. Joe made a deal with the Federation – he made sure his people steered clear of the Federation trade routes. In return, the Federation would not prosecute any of the pirates from Joe’s Haven. The Federation benefits from this deal by gaining a certain “control” over piracy. In exchange for this safety, Joe’s Pirates share their loot within the community, which benefits all pirates in the hub.

“The life of a pirate is short. Joe’s Haven can make it longer.”
Mallard Order

The Mallard Order is a devoted cult of duck worshippers, wearing duck-looking hats, and operating duck-looking ships. They hail from Fowlhaven – a flat world covered in water, where ducks populate ponds situated on top of flying islands. Despite the lack of a strong navy, the Order has successfully protected the Fowlhaven wildlife from numerous colonization attempts over the last centuries. The Mallard Order draws its power from unity and connection to nature. It aims to preserve their way of life in the ever-changing galaxy.

“Protect ducks, because one day, you will need their protection.”
Starlit Dominion

The Starlit Dominion is a space monarchy that controls an entire solar system. It is a wealthy superpower ruled by hedonistic aristocrats who maintain a class system. They idolize the separation between a culturally superior wealthy nobility and the peasantry that serves them. Many seek to abolish the Dominion classism and create an equal yet cultureless society. As such, the Dominion nobility stands guard to protect its culture against such barbaric initiatives. The Dominion fleet actively searches for powerful alien artifacts to bolster its might. However, upon finding them, the nobility appropriates them as artistic decorations instead.
