Solaria: Dawn of Heroes

Character Design

About Solaria

Solaria is a real-time action Diablo-like RPG with unique multi-hero-based combat. You start with several heroes and switch back and forth between them, one at a time.

My Involvement
I wrote the lore for the game's world, which includes its history, geography, factions, and species. Once the high concept was approved, I wrote and planned the storyline campaign. Next, I wrote descriptions and backstories for characters, bosses, and NPCs. Finally, I collaborated with concept artists to bring characters to life.

Backstory
When Leo was a young Solarian guard captain, he fell in love with a mysterious and beautiful girl named Lyra. Lyra was kind and gentle, and they spent much time together. They dated for several weeks, their bond growing stronger each day. Lyra has always tried to convince him to spend time outside the city walls, but Leo couldn’t do it because of his duties.

One day, he finally took a day off and left the city with her. Once they got far from the city walls, Lyra suddenly opened a portal to the void realm and tried to push Leo into it. Leo dodged the attack and saw her true nature; she was a succubus, a demon that feeds on the life force of humans. Lyra revealed that she had been using Leo all along - her goal was to draw him out of the city, away from the Symbol of Hope that weakens her powers, where she could drain him of his energy and devour his soul. Leo was horrified. He couldn't believe that the girl he loved was capable of such cruelty. When Lyra tried to pull him into the void realm portal again, he swung his two-handed sword, ending her life.

After Lyra's death, Leo was consumed by guilt and despair. His story with the succubus had become popular, and not in a good sense. For falling so easily into such trickery, the city guard could no longer keep Leo as the city guard's captain. But then, another opportunity revealed itself. A recruiter from the League of Heroes approached Leo and offered him a new purpose - to protect Solaria from evils like Lyra and ensure that no one would fall into the same trap. Under the tutelage of the League's masters, Leo learned the art of war and honed his combat skills. His experience as a guard captain and his leadership skills led other heroes to rely on his guidance in battle.

Overview (as shown in the game)
Ember hails from the Ashen Tribe, a community of natural fire wielders living near a massive volcano that dominates the landscape. Raised on the tribe's values of protecting the volcano's wildlife, Ember developed incredible powers in controlling fire. As a ranged caster, Ember relies on her quick reflexes and mastery of fire magic to deal devastating blows to her enemies, despite her relatively low HP.
Personality Traits
Sarcastic, Good-hearted, Outgoing, Tomboy, Curious

Temperament
Easygoing, Responsive, Restless, Impulsive.

Strengths
Compassionate, Good at improvisation, Adaptive

Weaknesses
Impulsive, Short temper, Tendency to overreact.

Backstory
Ember was born into the Ashen tribe, a tribe of natural fire wielders who lived next to Mount Inferno. She grew up learning the art of fire-wielding and became really good at it. Ember spent much of her spare time enjoying the company of the unique wildlife that lived near the volcano.

As time passed, the volcano cooled down, and the tribe started feeling their powers diminishing. A charismatic and powerful man named Kael offered a solution - to drain the volcano's power into a single artifact. Unlike the volcano, the artifact would not cool over time. The tribe accepted his solution and made him their new leader. Ember spoke out against it - draining the volcano's power would gradually kill all its wildlife - but nobody listened to her. After stalking Kael, Ember learned his true motives - he intended to drain the volcano's power and take control of the artifact. When Ember accused Kael of lying to the tribe, she was branded as a traitor and exiled.

Ember wandered the lands, looking for allies to help her take on Kael. Traveling across the land, she came across the League of Heroes, dedicated to fighting evil across Solaria. Ember persuaded two heroes to travel to Mount Inferno and take on Kael, but Kael proved to be extremely powerful - he killed one of the heroes and wounded Ember, forcing them to retreat. The League was devastated by losing their hero but couldn’t miss Ember’s remarkable fire-wielding skills. They offered Ember to join the League - this would help Ember become stronger and one day beat Kael. Ember agreed, passed all the League’s grueling trials, and eventually joined it as a new hero.

Fears
Failing to save her people and the volcano’s wildlife.

Team Dynamics
Ember hates planning and prefers to improvise. It puts her at odds with other team members, who think she is reckless.
Whenever someone brings up her tribe in a conversation, Ember becomes impulsive.

Habits
Demonstrating her fire skills - showcasing a small flame on her palm or firing a fire breath into the air. Sometimes, she accidentally burns a haystack and sets a roof on fire. Farmers often complain about her reckless behavior.

Hobbies
Performing and conducting pyromancy shows at a local tavern

Education
As someone who grew up in a tribe, Ember is illiterate. But she has a good memory. She might struggle with reading the map, but she remembers the places she has been to without needing one.

Speech/Vocabulary
Ember has a simple manner of speech with down-to-earth conversations, even when speaking to people with a title (lord, king, etc.). She often “doesn’t fit in” in Solaria's culturally developed high society. But she doesn’t care about it.

Sample Dialogue Lines
- “Let's give them a warm welcome, shall we?“
- “These locals are so mean! They won't let me near their haystacks!“
- “I'm only warming up!“
- “If you ever feel stupid, once the locals tried to burn me at the stake.“
- “Hey, look! That roof is on fire! Should we let it burn?“
