Solaria: Dawn of Heroes

About Solaria

Solaria is a real-time action Diablo-like RPG with unique multi-hero-based combat. You start with several heroes and switch back and forth between them, one at a time.

My Involvement
I wrote the lore for the game's world, which includes its history, geography, factions, and species. Once the high concept was approved, I wrote and planned the storyline campaign. Next, I wrote descriptions and backstories for characters, bosses, and NPCs. Finally, I collaborated with concept artists to bring characters to life.

Character 1 - Leo

Main Playable Character

Basic Info
Sex: Male
Age: 35
Origin: Kingdom of Sol
Weapon: Sword
Game Mechanic Traits: Melee, Moderate Speed, Moderate HP

Overview (as shown in the game)
Leo is a devoted Hero of the League of Heroes. His unwavering commitment to safeguarding the lands from evil makes it so the other members of the League of Heroes hold him in high esteem. Leo's bravery, righteousness, and valor make him a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield. Leo is committed to keeping Solaria safe by eradicating any evil forces threatening it.
Personality Traits
Brave, Righteous, Altruistic, Caring, Straightforward, Honest

Temperament
A sense of balance characterizes Leo's temperament between being responsive and easy to work with and being careful not to get too much in conversations. When he feels like he is expected to open up about himself, he prefers to end the conversation and get back to work.

Strengths
- Courage and bravery: Leo's unwavering commitment to protecting Solaria and willingness to put himself in harm's way to achieve this goal demonstrates his bravery and courage.

- Altruism: Leo puts the well-being of others before his own.

- Willingness to learn: Leo always takes responsibility for his mistakes and learns not to make the same mistakes in the future.

Weaknesses
- Righteous impulsiveness: When someone he cares about is in danger, Leo tends to rush into combat and overlook important details and strategic advantages.

- Tunnel vision: Leo's single-minded focus on his mission to protect Solaria causes him to become so fixated on his goal, that he ignores potential threats or fails to see the bigger picture, which leads him into enemy traps and other dangers.

Backstory
When Leo was a young Solarian guard captain, he fell in love with a mysterious and beautiful girl named Lyra. Lyra was kind and gentle, and they spent much time together. They dated for several weeks, their bond growing stronger each day. Lyra has always tried to convince him to spend time outside the city walls, but Leo couldn’t do it because of his duties.

One day, he finally took a day off and left the city with her. Once they got far from the city walls, Lyra suddenly opened a portal to the void realm and tried to push Leo into it. Leo dodged the attack and saw her true nature; she was a succubus, a demon that feeds on the life force of humans. Lyra revealed that she had been using Leo all along - her goal was to draw him out of the city, away from the Symbol of Hope that weakens her powers, where she could drain him of his energy and devour his soul. Leo was horrified. He couldn't believe that the girl he loved was capable of such cruelty. When Lyra tried to pull him into the void realm portal again, he swung his two-handed sword, ending her life.

After Lyra's death, Leo was consumed by guilt and despair. His story with the succubus had become popular, not in a good sense. For falling so easily into such trickery, the city guard could no longer keep Leo as the city guard's captain. But then, another opportunity revealed itself. Leo was approached by a recruiter from the League of Heroes who had heard of his story. He offered Leo a new purpose - to protect Solaria from evils like Lyra and ensure that no one would fall into the same trap. Under the tutelage of the League's masters, Leo learned the art of war and honed his combat skills. His experience as a guard captain and his leadership skills led other heroes to rely on his guidance in battle.

Fears
Leo's fear of being exploited is closely tied to his fear of falling in love and exposing his feelings. He is afraid that someone will toy with his feelings and hurt him. Leo is extremely cautious in trusting new allies or falling for someone. He won’t forgive himself if any of his team members fall for the same trap as he had.

Team Dynamics
Leo's experiences with Lyra have left him deeply protective of those he cares about. Leo is fiercely loyal to his allies and will do whatever it takes to keep them safe, even if it means putting himself in harm's way. If anybody has to give his life, it would be him.

Personal Life
Leo's traumatic past has left him deeply scarred physically and emotionally. He finds it difficult to let anyone get too close to him. Leo avoids forming close relationships or pursuing romantic interests, fearing they may distract him from his mission or lead to further pain and heartbreak. Instead, he often spends his free time alone, lost in his thoughts or training tirelessly to improve his skills.

Habits
When Leo is idle and in a good mood, he hums a song he used to hear a few times when he was a kid. He doesn’t recall where he heard that song and from whom. But he wants to remember it.

Leo is a dedicated and disciplined warrior who takes his responsibilities as a hero seriously. As such, he has a daily routine that includes rigorous physical training, practicing swordsmanship, and honing his combat skills.

Hobbies
Leo enjoys spending his free time reading due to his disciplined and introspective nature. He may enjoy a variety of genres, from military strategy and history to philosophy and self-improvement.

Leo enjoys spending time in nature, taking long walks in the forest, or hiking through the mountains. These activities help him clear his mind, connect with his surroundings, and find peace amidst the chaos of battle.

Leo’s great aspiration is writing. Given his intense daily life, full of dangerous adventures, he has a lot to draw inspiration from. Sadly, most of his writing ends up nowhere, as he is too reluctant to show it to anyone.

Education
Leo grew up in a noble family but from the lesser nobility. His father was a soldier in the King’s army, which gave the family the right to settle in the City of Sol. It gave the family a status but not a high one. Leo had good teachers who taught him literacy, sword-fighting, geography, and the dogmas of the Church of Sol.

Speech/Vocabulary
Leo was raised on the ideals of knighthood and chivalry. He speaks politely, with no bad words, especially when speaking to women. He expresses himself clearly and cohesively, like a commander who briefs his soldiers or a knight who stands before the king.

Accent
Leo speaks in “proper” English, probably British. But rather London British. It should be easily understandable by non-English speakers.

Sample Dialogue Lines
- “If you do the deed, prepare to pay the price!“
- “Defend the weak, stand against the darkness.“
- “Stay vigilant. The shadows are always watching.“
- “Rest in pieces!“
- “Be prepared for anything, even unlikely allies.“
- “Never lose sight of our goal.“

Character 2 - Ember

Second Playable Character

Basic Info
Sex: Female
Age: 25
Origin: Ashen Tribe
Weapon: Staff
Game Mechanic Traits: Ranged, Caster, Low HP, Moderate Speed

Overview (as shown in the game)
Ember hails from the Ashen Tribe, a community of natural fire wielders living near a massive volcano that dominates the landscape. Raised on the tribe's values of protecting the volcano's wildlife, Ember developed incredible powers in controlling fire. Her skills and dedication caught the attention of the League of Heroes, who recruited her to help protect the kingdom of Solaria from the forces of evil. As a ranged caster, Ember relies on her quick reflexes and mastery of fire magic to deal devastating blows to her enemies, despite her relatively low HP.
Personality Traits
Sarcastic, Good-hearted, Outgoing, Tomboy, Curious

Temperament
Ember's temperament can be described as a combination of easygoing, and responsive but also restless and impulsive. On the one hand, she is always open to conversation and is generally curious about the people she works with. On the other hand, she feels guilty for not helping her tribe and is somewhat restless. Whenever someone brings up her tribe in a conversation, Ember’s mood drops. She might become impulsive and likely overreact to other people’s words.

Strengths
- Compassionate nature: Ember is a good-hearted person who will always help a friend in need. She is great at seeing the good in everyone, even when they mask it behind a bad attitude.

- Skill in improvisation: Ember's ability to adapt to changing situations quickly and effectively makes her a formidable opponent in battle. It also makes her good at finding quick solutions on the go and overcoming unexpected obstacles.

Weaknesses
- Impulsive nature: Ember's tendency to rush into action without planning can endanger herself and others.

- Quick temper and tendency to overreact: Ember's tendency to misinterpret or overreact to the actions of others can cause misunderstandings and conflict, even when none was intended.

Backstory
Ember was born into the Ashen tribe, a tribe of natural firewielders who lived next to Mount Inferno. She grew up learning the art of fire-wielding and became really good at it. Ember spent much of her spare time enjoying the company of the unique wildlife that lived near the volcano.

As time passed, the volcano was cooling, and the tribe started feeling their powers diminishing. A charismatic and powerful man named Kael offered a solution - to drain the volcano's power into a single artifact. Unlike the volcano, the artifact would not cool over time. The tribe accepted his solution and made him their new leader. Ember spoke out against it - draining the volcano's power would gradually kill all its wildlife - but nobody listened to her. After stalking Kael, Ember learned his true motives - he intended to drain the volcano's power and take control of the artifact. When Ember accused Kael of lying to the tribe, she was branded as a traitor and exiled.

Ember wandered the lands, looking for allies to help her take on Kael. Traveling across the land, she came across the League of Heroes, dedicated to fighting evil across Solaria. Ember persuaded two heroes to travel to Mount Inferno and take on Kael, but Kael proved to be extremely powerful - he killed one of the heroes and wounded Ember, forcing them to retreat. The League was devastated by losing their hero but couldn’t miss Ember’s remarkable fire-wielding skills. They offered Ember to join the League - this would help Ember become stronger and one day beat Kael. Ember agreed, passed all the League’s grueling trials, and eventually joined it as a new hero.

During the first period of her training, Ember proved to be impatient and only wanted to return to save her tribe from Kael. Eventually, she learned some patience and hope and realized that sometimes it’s better not to rush. When she completed her training, she hoped her first task would be to go and defeat Kael. But then, the Shattering happened, and the League had other, more imminent problems to deal with.

Fears
Ember left her tribe behind, knowing Kael was draining the artifact's power and slowly killing the wildlife. She knows there is nothing she can do at this point because there are more imminent evil threats to deal with. Her biggest fear is that it will be too late to save the volcano’s wildlife.

Team Dynamics
Ember hates planning because plans are pointless and never work 100% anyway. She prefers to get right into the action and improvise. It often puts her at odds with other team members, who think she is reckless. Sometimes her approach works - Ember finds a way to create a fire mayhem that ultimately helps the team. But sometimes it doesn’t. In cases where they need to rescue people, more careful planning is needed. And even then, Ember urges everyone to rush things.

Habits
Ember has the habit of demonstrating her fire skills, either showcasing a small flame on her palm or firing a fire breath into the air. The problem is that Ember isn’t careful enough. Sometimes she accidentally burns a haystack and lights up a roof on fire. There are many complaints from farmers about her reckless behavior.

Hobbies
Before joining the League of Heroes, Ember used to be a performer. She would put on fascinating pyromancy shows to entertain the crowd. Sometimes, Ember joins performers at local taverns and practices her old hobby. Unlike many other heroes in the League, Ember is also very outgoing, so the locals often see her.

Education
As someone who grew up in a tribe, Ember was illiterate until joining the League of Heroes. Her general history and geography knowledge is limited to her personal experiences. However, Ember has a good memory. She might struggle with reading the map, but she remembers the places she has been to without needing one.

Speech/Vocabulary
As an ordinary tribe girl, Ember has a very simple manner of speech. She prefers down-to-earth conversations, even when speaking to people with a title (lord, king, etc.). That’s why she often “doesn’t fit in” in Solaria's culturally developed high society. But she doesn’t care about it.

Sample Dialogue Lines
- “Let's give them a warm welcome, shall we?“
- “These locals are so mean! They won't let me near their haystacks!“
- “I'm only warming up!“
- “If you ever feel stupid, once the locals tried to burn me at the stake.“
- “Hey, look! That roof is on fire! Should we let it burn?“
